The Black Lotus is an incredibly rare card that is no longer in print. A large portion of the sales of this card on the internet are proxy (or fake) Black Lotus cards and worth nothing. Furthermore, most of these legitimate versions are damaged heavily. Buyers of the card should buy a graded card, or a card that has been confirmed legitimate.
The black lotus is not standard legal. It is not legal in any format besides the Vintage playing format ( the card is restricted in vintage). Due to this restriction, the card has limited playability in the game. The generic ability of this card makes it a staple in any vintage deck. Playing this card gives a player an extreme advantage.
It is not recommended for players to use actual copies of the Black Lotus while playing casual magic games. In a casual environment, the card is subject to hazards such as random spills, thievery from envious players, and accidental bending/scratching from normal play. In casual games, players will generally allow you to use proxy (fake printouts of the card) if you can prove you have ownership of the rare magic card.
